Outside catering means you can hire your own caterer instead of using the venue's kitchen. It matters most when the food carries family or cultural meaning, or when you already have a caterer you love. But venues that allow it can mean very different things by it, and the bar usually has its own rule.

We only count a venue when its own published details say yes or no. If a venue doesn't say, we leave it out rather than guess, so ask it directly.
Read the catering rules carefully
You bring any caterer you like, and the venue's price usually covers only the space. That means the most freedom and the most to organize: food, staff, plates, rentals, and cleanup all come from your caterer. Ask what kitchen, power, and water they'll have to work with.
The venue shares a list of caterers it knows but lets you use anyone. The list is a helpful shortcut. Ask whether a caterer from outside it needs approval, proof of insurance, or a walkthrough before your date.
The venue has its own kitchen and menu, and lets you bring someone else instead, sometimes for a fee, or only for a cuisine its chefs don't make. Ask what that fee is and whether the venue's staff still serve.
You can choose your caterer, but only from the venue's approved list. If you have a particular caterer or cuisine in mind, check that it's on the list before you book.
The bar is a separate rule. Plenty of venues that let you bring your own caterer still run the bar themselves, or charge a fee per bottle if you bring your own wine. Ask about food and drinks separately.
